Three days after the helpline for people harassed by recovery agents was started, police has received more than 60 complaints. The Crime Branch of Delhi Police that is monitoring the project also arrested two recovery agents on the basis of a complaint lodged through the helpline on Monday.
“The response to the helpline has been tremendous. People are calling us up and airing their grievances. We register the complaints and take action against the accused,” said Satyendra Garg, additional commissioner of police (crime).
The Anti Extortion Cell received 37 complaints on the first day when the helpline was started (26184455). On Monday, 20 people called on the help line.
Hindustan Times had reported about the “Anti Threat by Recovery Agents Cell” on December 16. Police said complainants could also call on the centralized help line number: 1090.
“We also have a fax line (26178123) where people can send their complaints. There have been several complaints where people said they were being harassed by recovery agents posing as policemen and lawyers,” said the officer.
Police said they would also arrest the officials concerned of the bank or the mobile phone companies at whose behest these recovery agents harass the customers.
“These recovery agents are hired by banks and mobile phone companies and are promised a decent commission based on the amount that they recover for the banks. Sometimes they earn Rs 4,000 in a day,” said a senior police officer.
Police said in the past three years, more than 50 people have been arrested for harassing customers.
Last year alone 30 cases of harassment by loan recovery agents were registered in Delhi.
“The Crime Branch has been entrusted with the task as it does not have any jurisdictional restrictions and we can register a case anywhere in Delhi. Moreover people have a centralised number where they can send their grievances,” police said.
