The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is on a sticky wicket again. For, Thursday's downpour has completely washed away MCD's tall claims that it had cleaned 1,500 storm water drains in the city.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded on waterlogged roads with the police diverting traffic coming from Gurgaon and going towards Vasant Kunj. Traffic was also diverted due to waterlogging in Dhaula Kuan area.
The civic agency received 20 complaints of waterlogging from areas such as ISBT, Malkaganj, Pusa Road, Anand Parbat, Rani Jhansi Road, Kishanganj and Rao Tula Ram Marg among others.
The Delhi traffic police also received complaints of waterlogging from ITO, Ashoka Road, Windsor Place, Parliament Street and Laxmi Nagar.
Rajiv Sinha, one of the aggrieved commuters, said, "We were stuck in the jam for over one- and- half- hours at Dhaula Kuan. Though it did not rain heavily in the afternoon, the fact that it resulted in such huge traffic jams should be an eye opener for the civic authorities who claimed to have made adequate arrangements."
Heavy rain also affected traffic flow in many areas in the city, especially in central and south Delhi.
However, the civic agency blamed "lack of co-ordination" for the problem that has compounded.
"We have cleaned all the drains that come under our jurisdiction but those in unauthorised areas, which are maintained by the Delhi government, have not been cleaned. That is the main reason for the mess. These drains are responsible for the increase in waterlogging cases," claimed Subhash Arya, leader of the MCD House.
The Safdarjung MeT Department recorded 0.8 mm rain on Thursday and has predicted one or two spells of rain on Friday.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degree Celsius, normal for this time of the year and against the Thursday's 34.7 degrees.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.2 degree, down from Wednesday's 28.7 degrees.
