A strong demand was on Thursday made in the Rajya Sabha to reduce petrol and diesel prices with a dip in the global price of crude oil.
"Prices of crude oil in international markets have come down to 60-61 dollars per barrel and we demand reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel," CPI(M) member Prasanta Chatterjee said during Zero Hour.
He said fuel prices were hiked on the pretext of international crude oil prices touching 70 dollars per barrel and was done on the eve of the budget session.
Government had hiked the prices of petrol by Rs four per litre and diesel by Rs two per litre on July one.
Praveen Rashtrapal (Cong) expressed serious concern over the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad which claimed several lives.
Alleging that illicit liquor business in Gujarat was going on in connivance with police and other government departments, he said the state government has miserably failed to protect the people.
He wondered how liquor was available in the state where total prohibition was in force.
Santosh Bagrodia (Cong) raised the issues of a pregnant woman branded as HIV positive and paraded in a hospital and a four-year old girl mauled by a stray dog not being provided treatment in Gujarat.
Alleging that there were many other such incidents, he demanded that the Centre should go into these incidents and submit a report to Parliament.
