Sanitation workers attached to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation will soon don designer uniforms as the municipal body has decided to get their attire designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

About 15,000 sanitation workers employed in the area will be provided uniforms for which the corporation will pay Rs 5 lakh to the design institute.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at transforming the organisational culture of the corporation.

"The unified MCD used to give uniforms to the employees and we are just trying to improve on it. The initiative will give them a new and improved look. We are expecting a sample soon which we will present before the deliberative wing," said a senior official of the corporation. NIFT will also design the school uniforms of 2.5 lakh students studying in east Delhi's municipal schools.

The NIFT's designers will design two sets of clothings - one for the summer and one for the winter season.

The designed cloth will be given to the sanitation workers so they can get it stitched accordingly. A decision is yet to be taken on whether the school students will be given cash for buying the cloth for the dress or whether the corporation will give them ready-made uniforms based on the new designs.
