A 45-year-old divorcee with a professional penchant for investigation, Geeta Sharma had bumped into Inspector Badrish Dutt soon after he was inducted into Delhi Police as a sub-inspector in 1991. Dutt was then attached to the Janakpuri police station.

The two had grown closer to each other with the passage of time. Sharma was a single-mother hailing from Mumbai with a teenaged son studying at a university in Singapore. Dutt, suspecting his Faridabad-based wife of cheating on him, had decided to move-in with Sharma about a year-and-a-half ago.

Things, however, were not destined to remain the same for long. Sharma’s alleged involvement in forging documents purportedly issued by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) led to her arrest by the crime branch and resultant 20-day stint at Tihar Jail. “Her arrest opened a Pandora’s Box,” said one of Dutt’s colleagues.

“His job as a police officer came in the way of their relationship. So much so that she wrote about a feeling of betrayal in her jail diary.”

“Everyone has used me in this life. The same people because of whom I went to jail didn’t so much as even visit me when I was behind bars”, a noting in a small jail diary which she had maintained, according to special cell sources, had read.

Maheshwar Dayal, the joint commissioner of police, said investigating officers had recovered a jail diary Sharma would write during her stay in Tihar Jail. “She wrote in the diary that none including ‘B’ was visiting the jail to meet her,” he added. Sharma was released on bail in early May.
