Here’s what gold lovers are looking for this Dhanteras — jewellery inspired by Bollywood movies such as Baahubali and Padmavati are in great demand.

Indians have a special corner in their heart (and shopping bags) for the yellow metal. We don’t really need an occasion to invest in gold, but Dhanteras is a time when investment is also about scoring the best that the market has to offer.

The jewellery worn by actor Deepika Padukone in the trailer of the upcoming movie Padmavati (2017), and the ones adorned by actor Tamannaah Bhatia in Baahubali are the flavour of the season. Ankit Gupta, owner of Roop Jewellers in Chandni Chowk, says, “The trend of polka jewellery started during Jodhaa Akbar(2008). These days chand bala earrings (gold diamond polki) are in trend as Deepika Padukone is seen wearing them in Padmavati (2017). Logon ko wohi pasand hai, jo latest hota hai (People like to go for whatever is latest). Customers often get a picture of whichever jewellery piece they want to get made. The price range starts from Rs 60,000 and goes up to Rs 5 lakh, depending on the make and craft. Each piece is customised according to the budget of the customer.”

Similarly, Veepane Singhal, owner, Regalia Jewellery House, Chandni Chowk, says, “We are getting a lot of queries, as whatever is in trend, people want to get replicas or imitation pieces of the same. Baahubali was very famous and the jewellery got a lot of praise. A lot of people are looking for that now, for Dhanteras. The craze for jewellery shown in Padmavati is picking up as the movie is nearing its release.”

The trend isn’t restricted to just Delhi. People in nearby suburbs are also looking for Bollywood inspired designs. “Out of 10 customers, eight are asking for Padmavati jewellery. Deepika has nailed it this time! The only issue is that I keep telling my customers that such jewellery doesn’t have a long life. The designs are so intricate that they break down easily. But, they still ask for it, such is the trend,” says Manoj Aggarwal who owns a jewellery shop in Faridabad.
