With assembly elections due next year, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit wants to ensure that civic amenities in her Gole Market constituency are in good shape.

Dikshit chaired a high-level meeting on Friday to review water and electricity supply in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area, particularly Gole Market. The NDMC chairperson, CEO of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and senior officers of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) attended the meeting.

The chief minister asked the officials to make the exteriors of government quarters in the NDMC area more attractive and aesthetic. This will be completed before the Commonwealth Games begin. A fresh and different coat of paint and improved parks are also on the cards.

Government employees form the majority of Dikshit's voters in this assembly segment.

Dikshit, who is looking to be elected from the area for the third time in a row, also said that NDMC, CPWD and DJB should work in tandem to ensure equitable distribution of drinking water. More underground reservoirs will be constructed. Officials are preparing a plan to replace old water pipelines, which were laid when the entire area used to have single-storey quarters. Damaged pipelines will be replaced on priority. In addition, the storage level of Talkatora Water Tank will be raised to maintain appropriate level of water supply in the area.

For electricity, Dikshit decided to upgrade the entire system by 2008. Load in 6,274 government flats in Gole Market is likely to go up by five times soon. Every flat here will then require a load of 3 KW against the current 0.6 KW.
