A 35-year-old dismissed soldier was arrested on Friday in the national capital for allegedly murdering a married woman with whom he had an extra-marital relationship, police said today.

Sohan Lal, hailing from Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand, was apprehended from Burari for his alleged involvement in the murder of Sunita on September 14, a senior police official said.

Sunita was found dead in a room rented by Lal in central Delhi's Manakpura.

"We got information that Sunita used to visit his room too often and she had been introduced to the house owner as his sister-in-law. Lal was found absconding from the day of incident," the official said.

It came to light during investigations that Sunita used to work as a supervisor in a hotel in Paharganj where Lal was a steward.

"An intimacy developed between them although both are married. About a month ago, they were sacked and the deceased started maintaining a distance from Lal which annoyed him," the official said.

He was arrested when he came to meet his sister in Burari.

During interrogation, he told police that he was employed in Indian Army as a soldier but sacked from the force on the allegations of theft in 2000.

In 2006, he started working as a steward in a hotel in Paharganj where Sunita also used to work as a supervisor.

"Her husband was suffering from some disease which was at an advance stage and her family life was disturbed. After she came in contact with Sonu, they developed extra marital relations," the official said.

After their sacking from the hotel, the official said Sunita started neglecting Lal which annoyed him. "Lal also came to know that she has been engaged with some other person. On the day of incident, he bought a knife and called Sunita to his room. When Sunita came there, he slit her neck and fled away," the official said.
