The transport department is working out a proposal to extend three lines—two existing and one proposed—by a few more kilometres to benefit more people. They include extending the existing Noida-Dwarka line to Najafgarh and the Dilshad Garden-Rithala line up to Bawana. The transport department would also ask the DMRC to take the proposed Noida-Janakpuri line to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar.

With an almost 192-kilometre network—two existing and one proposed—already under its belt, the DMRC has been actively working to expand the metro network by more than 100kilometres in the next four years.

The DMRC board on Tuesday approved the phase 3 expansion plans and sent it to the Group of Ministers for approval. However, the three new extensions proposed by the transport department are currently not part of DMRC’s detailed project report.

Senior transport department officials said a proposal in this regard would soon be brought up in the cabinet meeting. Once approved, a formal communication would be sent to the DMRC to include the extension in its plan.

“With the extension of the proposed Noida-Janakpuri line up to Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, we would be able to complete a ring along the Outer Ring Road. This would not only benefit lakhs of people living in west Delhi, but we would also be able to effectively plan our public transport and feeder bus service around the metro line,” said a senior transport department official.

Though the Delhi Metro had initially planned this line up to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar only, it later decided to terminate the line at Janakpuri.

Talking about the Najafgarh extension, transport department officials said a detailed project report for this extension was made out in 2007 but the plan was dropped as not many were expected to travel by metro. “Najafgarh is likely to turn into a big housing and commercial hub in the next few years. A metro line now would help in the planned development of the area,” the official said.

The extension of Rithala line up to Bawana has also been in the transport department’s plan of things for quite sometime now.
