The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has asked for more land from NDMC and Land and Development Office (L&DO) as part of its ambitious phase 3 project.
The Metro project - connecting Central Secretariat with Janpath and Mandi House upto Lal Quila - will be carried out simultaneously with Connaught Place (CP) restoration work. DMRC has agreed to do so to avoid getting in the way of the CP project.
Senior NDMC officials have said that the civic body will most probably give a nod to the request in a few days.
"Land acquisition is an ongoing process and the process is on. Whatever land will be acquired now, it will be for phase 3," said a DMRC official.
DMRC has demanded 24,813.585 sq metres of land for permanent usage and 824.08 sq metres of land for temporary usage. Land demanded permanently will be used mostly to build tunnels and that demanded on a temporary basis will be for minor construction work.
A portion of land inside Chanderlok building complex has been demanded by DMRC on temporary basis.
According to sources, temporary land will be used for a period of three years and shall be returned after completion of construction and restoration. It has been proposed to used the permanent land for utility structures as per the L&DO approval.
Phase 3 work will mean total halting of traffic on Janpath and is expected to create a lot of traffic problems in Connaught Place area. Traffic diversions are expected to put extra pressure on nearby roads.
