Don’t smoke, drink? Go to this school

Chuck that cigarette forever, forget about the succulent kebabs you dig and say no to alcohol. Before you jump to any conclusion, these are not your tips for healthy living.
Rather, turning vegetarian, becoming a teetotaler and a non-smoker can bring in those coveted nursery admission points for parents. In a one-of -its-kind case, the Mahavir Senior Model School, North Delhi will be giving 5 points each for non-smokers, vegetarians and non-drinkers, bringing the total to 15 points.
“These parameters are a means to promote healthy lifestyles among our students and families. We also continuously discuss these issues
in the school assembly and the school newsletter so that parents and children practice healthy habits,” said principal S.L. Jain.
Parents however, are curious about how the school would determine whether parents were telling the truth or not.
“The nursery admission scene is so desperate that parents would not mind turning vegetarian or quit smoking temporarily. How will the school test the parents,” asked Amit Dutta, parent of 3-year-old Subhashree.
Jain explained that there was no need for the school to test parents. “Once a parent gives an undertaking we accept it at face value. Why would parents want to lay the foundation of a long relationship with a lie?” asked Jain. “After all the child will study in the school for 14 long years and he/she will constantly be exposed to our philosophy,” he said.
However, parents are not very happy with the criteria.
