Doordarshan begins HDTV broadcast

Just like the Asian Games introduced India to colour television in 1982, the 2010 Commonwealth Games too marked a turning point in Indian broadcast history.

Just like the Asian Games introduced India to colour television in 1982, the 2010 Commonwealth Games too marked a turning point in Indian broadcast history.

On Sunday, Doordarshan (DD) — the official broadcaster of the Games in India — launched high definition television (HDTV) broadcast, which provides viewers a picture that is five times clearer than an ordinary one.

Doordarshan had announced last year to offer the entire Games in high definition. This is for the first time that the Games will be broadcast in sharper resolution.

The broadcast will be available through DD HD, a new HD channel, while regular DD will continue to feature standard quality coverage. Most cable providers started offering HD earlier this year.
