Three armed assailants overpowered a 57-year old driver, forced him into his car, drove around for several kilometres and fled after robbing and dumping him at a secluded spot in south Delhi on Sunday, police said.
Police said the incident was reported from near the Grand Hotel in Vasant Kunj where Narayan Mukhiya, a native of Bihar, had gone to drop off his employer and his family around 8.30 pm.
“I had gone to drop my employer, Vikas Gupta, and his family in their Toyota Innova car to the Grand Hotel. After dropping them, I went to the taxi stand near the hotel, where I parked my car and began listening to the cricket commentary,” Mukhiya told police.
“Around 11 pm, a 25 to 30-year-old man clad in a safari suit, came up to me and asked me the time. As I looked down to check my watch, he pushed me onto the passenger seat and told me to remain quiet as he pointed a gun at me,” he said.
Just then, Mukhiya told the police, two more men got inside the car.
While one of them forced Mukhiya’s head down and threatened him with dire consequences if he made any sound, the other, seated in the back, pulled out a knife and pointed it at him.
“According to his complaint, the assailants then started the car and drove off towards Moti Bagh,” said a senior police officer.
“As they drove, the assailants demanded to know where the cash and valuables were in the vehicle. When Mukhiya said he didn’t know, they snatched his mobile phone and ATM card in addition to his employer’s Blackberry phone and dropped him off below the flyover.”
A case of robbery, under section 392 of the Indian Penal Code, has been registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station and investigations are underway.
