Getting a driving licence is set to get easier.
To make the process more transparent, the transport department is bringing in lots of changes.
To start with, an instant test for the learner’s licence will be implemented across all zonal transport offices by April 15. The transport department had recently done a pilot project at its Vasant Vihar zonal office, which was quite a success.
“After filling up the form and submitting biometric details, like fingerprints and digital signatures, the applicant will have to answer 20 basic questions related to traffic and road rules on a computer. Results would be available within a minute of taking the test. Successful applicants would be given a learner’s licence within five minutes,” said Anil Chhikara, motor licence officer, Vasant Vihar.
Permanent licence will now be couriered to your doorstep. The system will start from Vasant Vihar and Wazirpur zonal transport offices from February 2 and will soon be adopted at the remaining 11 zonal offices in Delhi.
“This system will ensure that the applicant does not have to wait unnecessarily for hours at the transport office. The system will also help us verify the residential address mentioned by the applicant,” a senior transport official said.
The transport department has tied up with DTDC for delivery of licences. It will be delivered within 72 hours of submitting the application. The applicant will also be able to track the status of the licence by entering the receipt number on a website.
