There is bad news for those hoping for an early respite from the fog.

A slight drizzle early on Monday morning cleared the sky but may make matters worse for the city and its adjoining areas hit hard by the fog cover, as it injected a fresh load of moisture in the air.

The Capital — where schools’ winter break has been extended and many offices have opted to start late by an hour — woke up to yet another foggy morning.

The drizzle of 0.2 mm had left its mark. But it was a bit warmer than the past few days. “At 8.3 degrees Celsius, it was a few notches warmer than Sunday. The night temperatures have risen thanks to a cloud cover over the city,” said the duty officer at the Safdarjung Met office.

But the cold is the least of Delhi’s worries. “Some snowfall and rain have occurred in nearby regions in North India. That’s why the chances of dense fog are not abating. With all the preconditions prevailing in the system, there will be dense fog in the next few days,” said B.P. Yadav, spokesman of India Meteorological Department (IMD).

With the rain clearing some of the overcast conditions prevailing in Delhi for the past few days, the sun could bring in some warmth and raise the maximum temperature to 20 degrees Celsius, a few degrees more than Sunday, the weatherman said.

Some flights were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday after fog descended early in the morning. Twenty-two flights, mostly international, had to be rescheduled.
