A television journalist mowed down an ice cream vendor at the Ashoka Road-Andhra Bhavan roundabout late on Monday night, the Delhi Police said.
The police said the accused was heavily drunk and crushed the victim when he was taking a turn near Andhra Bhavan. The police said that the victim, Amar Kumar (30), was pushing his ice cream cart towards India Gate when the car hit him.
In a special drive against drink driving on New Year’s Eve, the police booked 185 persons. “Most of them were too drunk to drive. We detained them, impounded their vehicles. Those who could arrange another driver were allowed to go, but people who were driving alone were made to stay at the police picket for four to five hours,” said a senior police officer.
The police said around 11.55 pm on Monday, the accused, Neelu Ranjan (35), was returning home with his wife after celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Press Club of India when he reportedly hit Kumar. The police added that Ranjan was highly inebriated when he hit Kumar. “The impact of the accident was so great that Kumar was flung in the air and the accused rammed his car into the footpath,” said a senior officer.
The accused took Kumar to RML Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The police have impounded the car of the accused.
The accused was arrested, but granted bail later.
