Two men were killed and three others critically injured on Sunday night after they lost control of their car and hit a tree on south Delhi’s Rao Tula Ram Marg. Police said all five occupants were in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident.
The incident happened at 11:30pm when the victims were returning to their residence in west Delhi’s Sagarpur. According to the police, while Amit, 25, and Navneet, 35, died on the spot, Anil, 26, Parul, 31, and Pankaj, 32, were critically injured in the accident.
The occupants of the car were returning from a party at Ambience mall in Gurgaon. Police said Amit and Navneet were students of interior designing and had recently landed jobs at an architectural firm in south west Delhi. They were out to celebrate their new jobs.
“The car was running at high speed and after turning towards Rao Tula Ram Marg, Pankaj, the driver of the car, lost control and hit a divider. Owing to the high speed of the vehicle, the car rolled over several times before finally hitting a tree,” said a police official.
According to Parul’s statement, they decided to take an alternative route through Rao Tula Ram Marg owing to heavy traffic near Dhaula Kuan.
Pankaj managed to escape the accident and notified the police. Fearing legal consequences, Pankaj after informing the police escaped before help could arrive.
“Amit and Navneet sustained injuries to the head and the body and were declared brought dead. Anil and Parul were found unconscious,” said a police official.
“The occupants were drunk during the time of the accident. Pankaj was driving the car, Parul, the owner of the car was sitting on the front seat.
Amit, Navneet and Anil occupied the rear seat,” said a police official.
“We have registered a case under sections of death due to negligence, causing hurt by act of endangering life and rash driving at the South Campus police station,” said a senior police official.
