A 16-year-old school student was killed and three others injured after a DTC bus crashed into a wall below the Modi Mill flyover in southeast Delhi on Friday morning, the police said.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Naveen Kumar, a class eleven student in a government school in Haryana’s Dhiroki village, was killed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall beside which he and the other three were standing.
“The bus, an old model of DTC, was running on route number 463 and was on its way to Kalkaji from Srinivaspuri when the driver, who claimed that the vehicle’s brakes were defective, lost control of the bus,” said a senior police officer.
The Police said the vehicle hit Naveen and three others, including a 55-year-old woman, below the flyover. All five victims were rushed to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS where Naveen was declared brought dead. The other two, identified as Kanhaiya Lal and Shri Paswan, were discharged after minor medical aid.
“Fortunately, there were no passengers in the bus when the accident took place and Devender, the driver, was arrested from the spot. He claimed that he had applied brakes several times but the vehicle did not stop,” the officer said.
Naveen, the police said, was in Delhi to attend a college fest held at the Acharya Narendra Dev College in south campus.
“One of Naveen’s close friends, Prabhu Dayal — a student of the same college — had invited him to the function. Naveen had got down at the Okhla railway station and was on his way to Govindpuri when the bus hit him,” the officer said.
A case of causing death due to negligent driving had been registered against Devender.
