Students and teachers of Delhi University colleges were in for a pleasant surprise on the day they reopened after the holidays.
DU, for the first time, announced on Thursday the semester exam dates months in advance. This, officials said, is a move aimed at ensuring that both students and teachers can work “backwards”.
“This should help students and teachers plan their schedules. Students can plan their vacations, while teachers plan lessons,” said a senior DU official.
Teachers were seen struggling to complete the syllabi before the last semester exams. This also led students to cram before the exams began. DU’s move, therefore, has understandably brought relief to both communities, who hope that classes and lectures can now be planned according to the requirement.
Earlier, the varsity would release dates of only the first exams. “Now the date of each test will help us plan our classes a lot better. A structured lesson plan will ensure that there is no rush at the end of the semester,” Kanika Khandelwal, who teaches psychology at Lady Shri Ram College, said.
“It is the students who stand to gain most from the move. A lot of students live outside the city. They can plan their holidays and other events,” Khandelwal added.
Students, however, remained sceptical, saying that they needed to be more familiar with their subjects before understanding the relevance of the dates.
Dhruv Khurana, a student of Sri Venkateswara College, said: “I was taken aback when I got my class and exam schedule on the same day. I cannot say for sure whether the schedule proves beneficial.”
