A final-year Delhi University (DU) student was mercilessly stabbed to death by nearly half-a-dozen attackers in southeast Delhi on Monday evening, police said.
Identified as Pankaj Kashyap, the victim was a student of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in South Campus and was attacked between 8.30 and 9pm near his Ambedkar Nagar residence.
“Kashyap was strolling in the Shivshankar Market near his house in Madangir when the incident took place,” said an officer. “He was accompanied by one Ravi, who owns a small provisional store in the area, and another friend when five men on three bikes intercepted them.”
The police said the incident was a fall-out of a six-month-old college rivalry. According to the police, the assailants cornered the trio and began assaulting Kashyap after shoving his friends away. Kashyap had reportedly had fought the college union elections last year but hadn’t won.
Onlookers told the police that Kashyap was the apparent target as his friends were assaulted but spared the knife attack.
Even as residents and market-goers looked on in horror, the assailants fled the spot, leaving Kashyap coughing blood. Witnesses later told police that he was attacked with knives around a dozen times. The police said they were in the process of ascertaining the same.
Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (southeast), was unavailable for comments but sources claimed that one of the assailants has been arrested. “We were intimated about the incident by witnesses. A team was rushed to the spot and took Kashyap to the hospital where doctors declared him dead due to multiple stab injuries,” a senior police officer said.
On Tuesday morning, Kashyap’s incensed relatives blocked the BRT corridor for two hours, alleging police inaction and lifted the blockade only after being assured of a swift investigation by senior police officers.
A case of murder and common intention has been registered at the Ambedkar Nagar police station and investigations are underway in addition to arrests, the police said.
PK Khurana, the principal of Kashyap’s college, when contacted, said he was unaware of the incident.
