A day-long hunger strike opposing the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) proposed service conditions called by the Federation of Central Universities Teachers' Association (FEDCUTA) on Saturday came as bad news for students appearing for their mid-term papers.

Colleges such as Shri Ram College of Commerce, Kirorimal, Zakir Hussain, Jesus and Mary, Motilal Nehru, Satyawati, Ram Lal Anand, Shaymlal College, Shri Venkateshwara, Deen Dayal Upadhaya and Aurobindo postponed the exams to January 21 and 22.

But colleges such as Maitryee, Ramjas and Hansraj decided to go ahead with the exams.

“The time was too short to inform the students about the postponement. Rescheduling would have also affected the tempo of the students who are already prepared for the exam,” said V.K. Kawatra, principal of Hansraj College.

The federation also staged a demonstration at the UGC headquarters near ITO to protest against the proposed retrograde service conditions of university and college teachers. Teachers in central universities will further protests on January 28 and 29.
