Six months after they were repeatedly raped and robbed by two touts in central Delhi, two Dutch women testified against a Kashmiri youth on Friday, police said.
“According to Eve De Canne (24) and Milly (23) (names changed) from the Netherlands, Yasir Atlaf (23) and Omar Baktoo —who were posing as registered travel agents — lured them to Srinagar where they were raped daily for a week,” said Shankar Dash additional CP (New Delhi).
Police said De Canne and Milly had bumped into the Kashmiri duo in the capital.
“The women reached Delhi on January 5 and ran into Atlaf and Baktoo in Connaught Place the next day,” said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
He said the touts succeeded in luring the women to their hometown two days later.
“They helped them travel to Kashmir at cheaper rates. On January 8, the women went to Srinagar, accompanied by Atlaf and Baktoo, and stayed on Omar’s houseboat - where their passports were seized by the boys,” the officer said. Police said it was here that they were raped routinely for a week.
“Threatened with dire consequences and in need of their passports, the girls put up with the abuse not only for a week at Srinagar, but for six more days after the group returned and stayed at a budget Karol Bagh hotel,” said the officer.
A week before they were due to leave the country, the Dutch duo approached the police on June 25.
“Atlaf was arrested at the complainants’ instance and a manhunt has been launched to find Baktoo,” Dash said.
According to police however, the two Dutch nationals weren’t Atlaf and Baktoo’s first or only victims.
“They used to befriend female foreign visitors in the garb of government-approved tour guides-cum-travel agents, lure them to their home town Srinagar, seduce them and blackmail them for a living,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
A Moroccan woman was also lured by the duo in January, the officer said, adding the woman was raped and her passport taken away. She is now “trapped” in Jangpura in a house leased out to the accused, he said.
