In the run up to the Commonwealth Games in 2010, the trans-Yamuna area in the Capital is all set to get as many as 50 community centres.

“Construction of the Games Villages in the trans-Yamuna area will not only catalyse all-round development of the area, but would also ensure civic services and civic infrastructure at par with the more developed localities of the city,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said at a function here.

Senior Delhi government officals said the need for community centres has increased many fold. With the MCD coming down heavily on illegal banquet halls, there is an urgent need for places where people could hold social gatherings and private functions.

The horticulture department has also imposed a ban on pitching tents on a number of parks across the city.

These centres are expected to go a long-way in serving the needs of the local residents, the chief minister said.Thirty-one community centres are already operational in east Delhi.

Dikshit further said 50-60 public toilets would also be constructed by the the Trans Yamuna Development Board.
