A day after her body was recovered from a drain in southwest Delhi's Dwarka, the police suspect that the eight-year-old girl who had gone missing from her residence on February 19, was probably pushed to her watery grave.

"Today, post-mortem examination was conducted on the victim, who has been identified as Laxmi Kumari. Doctors have attributed her death to drowning. Examination has also revealed that the victim was not sexually assaulted," said Sharad Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police (southwest).

According to the police, Laxmi had gone missing from her residence in Bindapur's Uttam Vihar area on the evening of February 19, after leaving for her tuition classes.

"Four days later, her body was recovered from a drain in sector five. Her water bottle and a pair of slippers were also recovered from the edge of the drain. The body was then rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital," the officer said.

Police said they suspected personal enmity to be the reason behind the class two student's untimely death.

"We are investigating the case from all angles, including that of personal enmity,” Aggarwal said.

“Since she has no apparent injury marks on her body, her being lured to the drain and being pushed into it to punish her family, is certainly a possibility," Aggarwal added.
