As Air India flight IC 602 to Mumbai took off from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Wednesday evening, the airline's 22-year-old association with Terminal 1A came to end.

Air India had shifted to this terminal in 1988 and had been using it for handling its airbus operations. Now, with the national carrier shifting to Terminal 3 (T3), Terminal 1A will be closed for commercial operations. Go Air, that, too, was operating from 1A, will be shifted to Terminal 1D.

The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which has been operating the Delhi Airport, has no plans for this terminal. However, sources say the building will be demolished to make way for a new runway. "A temporary structure (Terminal 1A) was created to accommodate international VIPs arriving for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 1982. After the event, the terminal remained unused till 1988," said an Air India official on condition of anonymity.
