The Delhi Police have arrested a 32-year-old engineer for raping a girl on the pretext of marriage. The accused had got in touch with the victim through a matrimonial website.
The police said that after getting friendly with the girl, the accused — identified as Mohammad Sirajuddin Ahmed — invited her to Bhopal and developed a physical relationship with her.
“He called her to Bhopal and developed physical relations with her claiming that he would eventually marry her,” Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south) said.
“Ahmed also came to Delhi, where he took the victim’s ATM card and withdrew cash from her account. But after all this, he refused to marry her and went to back to Hyderabad, his native place,” the DCP added.
The police said that Ahmed ran an education society and his father was an inspector with the Maharashtra police.
Ahmed also organised cricket matches and was caught when a police team saw his number on a hoarding in Hyderabad.
“The victim did not have a photograph of the accused and only knew his phone number and the address of his educational society. A Delhi Police team went to Hyderabad to nab the accused but found that his office premises had been occupied by some other firm,” Sharma said.
The team then saw a hoarding for T-20 cricket matches to be held in six cities in south India with a phone number similar to that of the accused.
The police arranged a local SIM card and roped in a person with the local language accent.
The person contacted Ahmed claiming that he was the manager of a three local cricket teams that wanted to participate in the tournament.
Ahmed agreed to meet with team.
“He was arrested at 8.30pm on September 10 near Osmania Women College, Koti, Hyderabad where he had come to meet a member of the police team posing as the cricket team manager,” Sharma said.
The victim, a resident of Mehrauli, has also alleged that Ahmed cheated her of Rs 2.5 lakh.
Ahmed runs Prince Education Society and conducts scholarship examinations across the country, charging Rs 250 per student.
He also organises cricket tournaments under the name of All India Charminar Sports Academy.
