This year’s irregular monsoon rains — marked by scanty rainfall in the first few weeks of the season and excess rainfall in the most recent few weeks — might be part of a worldwide trend towards more unpredictable weather.

This year’s irregular monsoon rains — marked by scanty rainfall in the first few weeks of the season and excess rainfall in the most recent few weeks — might be part of a worldwide trend towards more unpredictable weather.

“There’s increasing evidence that there are longer dry spells between rains, and a bigger risk of drought and flooding occurring around the world,” said Kevin Trenberth, a climate change expert and head of the Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, USA.

Trenberth said the “same forces” — primarily global warming — are behind the irregular Indian monsoon and Typhoon Marakot.
