The people who supply electricity to your homes have fewer excuses for power cuts this summer. After spending around Rs 900 crore, the city's power transmission apparatus is facing the torrid season with new armour — one that is most breakdown-resistant, till date.
Also, Delhi Transco, the Delhi government-owned power transmission utility, has almost doubled the capacity of the amount of power its network of grids and substations can carry. Its ability to withstand extreme instability in terms of voltage has gone up substantially, too.
Its new high-capacity sub stations — at Ridge Valley, Delhi airport and Mundka — have been commissioned with higher handling capacity of 320 MVA (apparent power in electricity field). The robustness of its existing three crucial 220 KV transformers at Pragati (Gas Turbine), Patparganj and Shalimar Bagh has been doubled. The 50 MVA transformers have been replaced with 100 MVA ones and 100 MVA ones have been replaced with 160 MVA ones.
Simply put, transformer burnouts, tripping of grids and the like, which cause sleepless nights in Delhi's neighbourhoods in peak summer could be less, compared to last year. "There is a new underground cable network that makes accidental tripping all the more difficult," said a Delhi Transco spokesman.
Transco manages and monitors the power that is fed to discoms for further, last-mile delivery to consumers. A strong transmission network forms the backbone of the power distribution apparatus in a city.
Delhi's power distribution companies have, on several occasions in the past, blamed the Transco's supposedly frail infrastructure for lengthy power cuts.
The problem with the breakdown of transformers at the transmission level is that they take long to be fixed and during such periods, areas in their command have to suffer either intermittent power cuts or complete blackouts, for hours.
