From Friday, high-speed metro trains on the airport express line will run at an increased frequency of 15 minutes during the morning peak hours between 7 am and 11 am. With a new train added to the system, a total of four trains will ply on this route. Till Thursday the service frequency was 20 minutes with three trains running on the system.
Reliance Infrastructure, the concessionaire company, has increased the train frequency keeping in mind commuters’ convenience during the peak hours, official sources said.
“We chose the morning hours since an internal study showed that ridership is high during that time. However, by August-end we will increase the frequency between 5 am and 11 pm,” said a Reliance Infrastructure official.
The increase in frequency of trains will help raise the average footfall from the present 12,000 which is much below the targeted ridership.
Low frequency of trains was one of the major reasons for the poor ridership on the system. The concessionaire company has also received commuters’ feedback in a survey regarding this. “Responding to the passengers’ request we have increased the frequency at the peak hours. This will bring Reliance Infrastructure at par with international metro standard,” said a company spokesperson.
