An executive with a drug company and his schoolteacher girlfriend set themselves on fire at the former’s Mukherjee Nagar house in North Delhi on Saturday.
Twenty-seven-year-old Amit Kumar Jha and 23-year-old Mamta wanted to get married but the two were well aware of the
opposition from their families. The couple were from different communities.
A native of Patna, Jha died in the hospital while Mamta (23) is critical with 85 per cent burns.
According to an eyewitness, Mamta visited Jha regularly over the last two years.
Police said Jha poured kerosene over himself and Mamta and set themselves on fire.
Around the same time a friend of Jha called on his mobile phone, which was answered by Mamta. She reportedly told the friend to come and save them. The friend then rushed to Jha’s house along with a few others.
“His friends had to push open the door. They saw the couple burning and immediately threw some water on them. Someone also wrapped them in a blanket,” the eyewitness said.
“On Saturday morning I saw her coming around 8:30 a.m. Later I went away to run some errand. At 9.30 a.m. when I came back I saw Mamta’s sister and a few friends were outside Jha’s room and screaming,” she said.
Neighbours said the couple was then taken in a friend’s car and rushed to Sunder Lal Jain Hospital in Ashok Vihar.
Puneet Kumar Aggarwal, the doctor who attended to the patients, said when they were brought to the hospital they were in a critical state.
Jha had over 95 per cent burns and Mamta received over 85 per cent burns. He succumbed to his injuries within a few hours.
Mamta’s family refused to speak, claiming that they did not know anything about the relationship or the incident.
