The police on Wednesday arrested the father of the teenager, who admitted beating up and severely injuring the two-year-old baby struggling for life in the AIIMS trauma centre, and a couple for abusing the 14-year-old girl.

The girl, who brought the baby to the centre on January 18 posing as her mother, was raped for six months and pushed into prostitution by an interstate gang, the police said Wednesday.

The teenager’s father, a house painter and his wife were arrested on the statement she recorded before the Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday. “The girl's father was arrested for physically assaulting and ill-treating her,” said Ajay Chaudhary, additional CP (southeast). Sandeep Pandey and his wife, Pooja, were arrested for forcing her into prostitution and subjecting her to repeated sexual abuse.

The girl lost her mother six years ago. Her father often refused her food and beat her up, the police said. In June 2011, she fled their Govindpuri home and turned to Pooja, who used to visit her often, for help.

A native of Sonagachi in West Bengal, Pooja sent the girl to Etah in Uttar Pradesh and tried to force her into marriage with "an older man". When she refused, the couple brought her back to Delhi, where Sandeep repeatedly raped her, said the police.

Sonagachi is the largest red-light district in Kolkata, and one of the largest in Asia.

The couple confined her to their Tughlakabad home and a few weeks later, sent her to an unidentified person's residence in Munirka, where she was abused sexually.
It was there that she met Dilshad Ahmed alias Rajkumar, a taxi driver who handed over the baby to her, in early November.

A married man with a child, Rajkumar "married" her in a temple in Kalkaji and started living with her in a hotel in Mahipalpur, police said. Facing charges of rape and abduction, Rajkumar continues to elude police. His last location was traced to Udaipur in Rajasthan.

The police on Wednesday requested AIIMS for the baby's DNA sample and test to help trace her parents. "The test will help track her parents. Her condition is critical. We need to have her blood sample," said a police officer.
