From survivor to saviour. Having beaten cancer in a short but fierce battle, Yuvraj Singh now wants to help others fight the disease. In a first step, he launched his charity — ‘YouWeCan’ — that will set up detection centres across the country and raise awareness.
“The idea came from Lance Armstrong’s ‘Live Strong’ foundation,” the batsman said Saturday. “I endured a lot of pain and don’t want others to go through this. Early detection and awareness will go a long way in saving lives.”
Armstrong, the US cycling legend who won the Tour de France a record seven times and a cancer survivor himself, had sent an inspiring message of support to the cricketer when he was undergoing treatment in a US hospital.
The YouWeCan initiative started taking shape when Singh was still in hospital. That’s why he decided to make his fight-back so public, releasing pictures of his bald head and puffy face and tweets about his treatment and the progress he was making.
“I wanted to send out a positive message to fellow cancer patients… I wanted to tell them that if I can fight this and win, they can too… I just want to tell them to be strong and their families to stand by their side,” he said.
YouWeCan will work closely with the Indian Cancer Society (ICS). “Having Yuvraj by our side will give that extra punch to our fight against cancer. He will offer hope to many,” an ICS official said.
The first centre is expected to come up by year end in Gurgaon.
