The dramatic U-turn by actor Shiney Ahuja’s maid, who had earlier accused him of rape, has brought a flicker of hope for the release of actor’s long pending films.

On Wednesday, Hindustan Times reported that Ahuja’s 20-year-old domestic help told the court that he “never” raped her, but she was “paid to frame Shiney.”

Shiney was accused of raping his domestic help at his Andheri (West) residence on June 14, 2009.

After this new development, the makers of Har Pall, who had earlier pushed the film’s release indefinitely, said “it was time to capitalise” on the sympathy the actor may get if he has been wronged.

Jahnu Barua, director of the film that also stars Preity Zinta, said: “The producer [Tito] has been reluctant to release Har Pall because of Shiney’s case. But, after the maid’s U-turn this may be the right time to release the film, because there is positivity around him after this revelation.” Shiney’s family and friends, however, chose to remain tightlipped about the development.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who has been following the case from the start, said: “We [me, Shiney and his wife, Anupam] have been advised not to talk to the media before the final court judgment comes.”

Pritish Nandy, the producer of Accident, another of the actor’s unreleased film, said: “I will go by the court ruling. It will be unfair to preempt a trial.”

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said: “There is a tendency of trying people before the verdict is out. I have always maintained that you should give a person the privilege of defending himself. The arguments are still pending in court, thus, we should not make the mistake that we made earlier. The maid’s U-turn comes as a huge relief to the family and friends.”
