Delhiites, it seems, can’t have enough of the Delhi Metro.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday started selling models of the Metro train at its museum’s souvenir shop at the Patel Chowk station.
Within hours, the entire stock was sold out.
DMRC had tied up with a toy manufacturer in view of the public demand for Metro models.
“The train model is an exact miniature of an actual metro coach ,” said DMRC spokesman. The steel gray model is made of non-toxic plastic.
“We clearly hadn’t anticipated such a demand on the very first day. Though the souvenir shop opens at 10 am, people had started queuing up since early in the morning,” he said.
DMRC has placed a bulk order for 3000 such models but on the first day, only about 100 models were brought.
“Seeing the huge rush, we asked the toy vendor to immediately send as many models as possible,” he said.
DMRC sold 374 models and earned Rs. 38,500. The models are priced at Rs. 95 and Rs. 105.
DMRC also plans to come up with slightly more expensive collectors’ model, which would be made of metal and would be exact scale model of the train.
“We initially asked the vendor to send 100 models in each batch but seeing the demand, we will have at least 500 model trains on Friday,” he said.
While the model train is a replica of the real trains, the cover box contains information about the dimensions and size of the Metro train.
