A first year student of Hindu College committed suicide at his rented accommodation in Vijay Nagar in north Delhi on Saturday morning. Police said they received a call about the incident at around 11:40 am.

"Our team reached there and rushed the 19-year-old boy to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. No suicide note was found from the spot. The boy is identified as Samiran Sethia, a native of Assam," a senior police officer said. Sethia was a first year student of BSc (Hons) Botany and had an exam scheduled for Friday.

The police did not clearly spelt out a specific reason, as it remained unclear whether Sethia took the extreme step because of exam stress or there was some personal reason.

"He used to live alone in his one-room accommodation. A neighbour knocked the door but no one replied. He later peeped into the room from a window and saw Sethia hanging from the ceiling fan," the officer added. The police are checking his call details and have informed his family. A post-mortem would be done only after his parents arrive from Assam.

“We will also take their (Sethia’s parents) statement to understand why the boy killed himself,” the officer said.
