There is more good news from Delhi Zoo. The 1,200 inhabitants of the zoo have seen the addition of five more members to their lot — one of them listed under schedule I — last week.

Two chinkara and three white deer —from the schedule I list — were born last week. These births came close on the heels of the birth of a baby Hippopotamus a fortnight ago.

With this, the total number of Chinkara has risen to seven (2 males and 5 females), of which three were brought from Chandigarh. The total number of White Deer has increased to five, including two males, Zoo director D N Singh said.

Earlier in June first week, the Hippopotamus family saw an addition to its clan. The news brought some cheer to the zoo, which had seen a spate of deaths a few months before it. The series of deaths over last three months started with pythons in February, a female chimpanzee and a female zebra in May apart from a pair of owls that went missing in April. The zoo has also seen several births under the conservation breeding initiative propagated by the Central Zoo Authority.
