Relatives of a couple, who eloped against their families’ wishes, assaulted each other in Bharat Nagar on Saturday night. Five persons were injured in the clash.

According to police, they have lodged cases against each other. “The families live on the same street and both allege the other came to their house and assaulted them,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest), N.S. Bundela said: “There was a dispute between the families over caste, as the boy and the girl belong to different ones. We are investigating the matter.”

The police said the boy, Umesh Sisodia, is a Rajput and the girl, Jyoti, is Jatav.

The two eloped and married on April 28.

“They came back few days after their wedding, but the families refused to accept their relationship. Their marriage was officially called off after a Panchayat meeting,” the police officer said.

According to the police, the couple separated in May and the girl was sent to one of her relative’s house in Ghaziabad. “Although both families called a truce after the panchayat intervened, on Saturday both families got into a fight,” the officer added.

According to the police, the couple belong to different castes but from the same village and that is the reason the families opposed the marriage.

The police have arrested Jyoti’s father Anil Kumar, his son who is a minor and Deepak, a neighbour in the case.

The incident comes close on the heels of the Ashok Vihar honour killings. Last month, Kuldeep Singh, his wife Monica, and their friend Shobha Nagar were shot dead, allegedly by Monica’s 22-year-old brother Ankit Khari and his friend Mandeep and Nakul in the Northwest Delhi area.
