Late night fog wrecked havoc at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) early on Friday. Both the airlines and the airport authorities were taken by surprise after dense fog engulfed the airport, causing major flight disruptions.

Nine flights were diverted after visibility dropped to almost zero around midnight and more than 100 flights were delayed.

"During CAT III condition, 234 flights were operated using the instrument landing system, which guides pilots to land in low visibility conditions," said a spokesperson of Delhi International Airport Limited.

Many international flights and early morning domestic flights were affected, as there was near-zero visibility between midnight and 8 am on Friday. Passengers were as usual at the receiving end.

"Our flight reached on time but since there were 14 aircrafts ahead of us, our pilot decided to fly overhead for 40 minutes," said Karthik, who was coming from Chennai.

The IGI Met director said: "Tomorrow we are not expecting fog, so the condition would be better on Saturday."
