Four assailants were arrested within 12 hours of having robbed a businessman in northwest Delhi, the police claimed on Monday. The mastermind of the robbery bid, according to the police, had suffered losses while betting on T20 matches.
Identified as Guddu Kumar, 19, Rajeev, 28, Sachin Mehta, 21 and Ajay Kumar, 22, the gang had robbed a cloth importer in Pitampura on June 1, said P Karunakaran, DCP (northwest).
“At 12:14 pm on June 1, a PCR call was received regarding the robbery of a laptop and bag near the power house located in Pitampura’s RU Block,” said DCP Karunakaran. According to the police, the victim had been intercepted by two assailants on a motorcycle on a service road as soon as he parked his car outside his office.
The men had attacked him and fled with two bags, one containing a laptop and the other containing R26.79 lakh in cash and some official documents.
“The team visited the spot and made enquiries about all who had knowledge of the cash, especially the victim’s employees. During investigation, it was revealed that Guddu Kumar, one of his employees for three years, had specific knowledge of the money,” said DCP Karunakaran.
Kumar’s credentials were verified and it came to light that he had suffered losses while betting during the T20. It was also revealed that he was in touch with some suspicious persons staying in Sultanpuri area. Following these leads, a police team zeroed in on him and interrogated him. He allegedly broke down during questioning.
“Following his admission, the team was sent and within hours of the robbery, arrested his other associates. Around R1.96 lakh was recovered from them,” DCP Karunakaran said.
