Four youths have been arrested for abetting the suicide of a 17-year-old girl they had molested.

Ashiya was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her house on Wednesday afternoon. Initially her parents thought that she was depressed due to a failed relationship. The girl was a student of Class 11.

The arrested accused have been identified as Aslam, Shaufeen, Jamali and Imran, all in their early 20s and residents of Jagdamba camp slum. Police said the arrest came after the girl’s family lodged a complaint against the boys.

Police had found a tattoo saying ‘Jaan Love S’ written on her hand and were of the impression that she was depressed because of her relationship. But her family later found that some local youths had been troubling her. The police eventually carried out an inquest proceeding under section 174 of the CrPc.

“We managed to identify the youths and detained them for questioning. Sustained interrogation revealed that the victim may have possibly committed suicide after being harassed by them,” the official said.
