A four-year-old girl was reportedly raped in west Delhi on Thursday night, the police said. Initial investigations show that a person known to the girl might have raped her, possibly her neighbour, the police said. According to the police, the alleged rapist was on the run.
According to the police, the girl was raped near her house at 9pm, when she was going to a nearby Sai Sandhya Puja. The police picked up several people from the locality for questioning.
Although a case was registered at the Khyala police station, the police were still on the look out for the accused, whose identity was not disclosed.
“We are questioning a few people from the locality. We believe it to be the work of a person who knew the girl. We will be certain only after further investigations are conducted in the matter,” said V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (west).
The deputy commissioner said the girl was raped when she ran out to attend a religious gathering happening in the area. “When the family found her missing, they went searching for her. After some search, they found her crying on a pavement,” he said.
The girl was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where her medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
In another incident, a man in Outer Delhi's Shahbad Dairy area allegedly raped his 23-year-old tenant on Thursday afternoon. According to the police, the landlord, Shambhu Nath Mandal, called on the woman at her house, where she lived with her husband and five-year-old son, to discuss rent and then allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The police arrested Mandal after the woman’s medical examination at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital confirmed rape.
