Friends of 19-year-old Pranav Dalal, who had jumped to death on Saturday after putting a status update on Facebook and sending text messages about his plans, had tried to dissuade him to not to take the extreme step.
Police sources said he had a chat on the social networking site with a friend minutes before committing suicide and his friend had asked him not to do anything untoward.
The same friend had taken him out for a movie the night before the suicide.
“When this friend saw the status update, he didn’t think Pranav was serious. He tried to talk him out but didn’t expect he would actually commit suicide. So he did not tell Pranav’s parents about it,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity. At 2.30 am on Saturday, Pranav, alias Parthiv, posted a status update saying “I will commit suicide and please inform my parents about it”.
At 7:15 am, a PCR call was made about a body lying outside Cariappa Apartments in Delhi Cantonment area. “During questioning, his friends told us about the status update on Facebook and it appears he had jumped around 3 am,” AK Ojha, DCP (southwest), said.
Pranav had also sent a text message to his girlfriend saying he was going to kill himself. She too sent a text message back dissuading him.
“It seems he had been threatening to commit suicide. So this time when he sent messages to his friends, they didn’t take it seriously,” a police officer said.
Pranav, a student of The Army Public School, was reportedly depressed that he couldn’t take his Class 12 exam as he hadn’t prepared well. The police said they were not clear why he had not prepared for the exam.
“He seemed upset about the fact that his friends would join college and he would be left behind. We are suspecting this could be the reason. However, no suicide note was found on him,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
Pranav’s father Shamsher Singh Dalal is a retired colonel. He refused to talk to media about the incident.
Pranav’s family used to live in Cariappa Apartments but had recently moved to Maurya Enclave. He had jumped from the sixth floor of the building.
“There is no foul play and we have showed the details from Facebook and his phone to the family members,” Ojha added.
