In a bid to fill up its empty coffers, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has sent property tax notices to the Commonwealth Games Village, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp, Delhi Police, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and around 200 Delhi government schools.
The municipal body has also decided to bring transmission towers of the Power Grid Corporation under the property tax net. Civic body officials said they had sent notices to the power corporation for the assessment of tax.
"The power corporation has been asked to self-assess its property tax. All the transmission towers under the jurisdiction of the corporation will come under the tax net. The tax will be calculated as per the area and the height of the tower," said east corporation commissioner SS Yadav.
The exercise is part of the civic body's efforts to meet the property tax target for the current financial year.
The corporation is focusing on maximising the property tax collection from the commercial and government-owned properties.
While there are around two lakh commercial properties in east Delhi alone, the government agencies owe around R200 crore to the corporation for over 1,200 properties in east Delhi.
The DDA alone owes around R120 crore to the corporation.
The east municipal corporation has set a target of collecting R133 crore as property tax this fiscal.
Till November 30, the property tax department has already collected R65 crore.
