Along with other parts of the country, the 10-day Ganesh festival that commences with Ganesh Chaturthi started in the capital on Wednesday. Through the capital does not see celebrations on the scale witnessed in Maharashtra, the tribe of Ganesh devotees is increasing by the day.
Shubhangi Chiplunkar, who runs the Maharashtra food stall at Dilli Haat, can vouch for it. She has been pressed for a while catering to the increased demand for Ganesha's favourite modak (steamed rice dumplings with filling of grated coconut cooked in jaggery) — almost 3,000 on first day.
Single working professionals who do not get time to attend aarti or participate in other festivities have found their own ways to pay respects to the deity.
Tamal Nath, working for an event management company, said he and his friends stay off alcohol and non-vegetarian food till immersion day. “I don't get time for pooja or go to a temple. Abstinence during this time is my way of expressing faith,” he said.
