The South Delhi Police have busted an interstate gang of car thieves involved in several cases of vehicle thefts and other heinous crimes in various areas of Delhi and the national capital region.
Two members of the gang, including its leader Shamsher Mewati who allegedly shot at the police party when confronted, have also been arrested.
"One country-made loaded pistol along with two live cartridges, eight stolen luxury cars including one Honda Civic, one Honda City, a Bolero, three Indigo and two Santro cars and two special master keys made with the help of a screw driver have been recovered from the arrested men," said HGS Dhaliwal, additional commissioner of police (south).
The other arrested gang member has been identified as Hashim. On April 16, police said, the Mewati gang had come to Savitri Nagar in Malviya Nagar in order to commit a crime.
"A trap was laid near Andolan Park in Savitri Nagar; the police started checking of vehicles. At 5.10pm, a white Indigo car coming from Outer Ring Road side was signalled to stop at the check-post. But instead of stopping the driver of the car accelerated and tried to drive away.
Mewati, who was sitting on the passenger seat, immediately came out of the car and shot at the police party from his country-made pistol. The police party acted swiftly and overpowered him immediately," Dhaliwal added.
Police said Mewati, in association with Hashim and other members of the gang, had stolen more than 30 cars and committed other heinous crimes in various parts of Delhi, NCR, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Police said the accused had purchased the country-made pistol and cartridges that he used on the police from one Pappu in Agra.
