The south Delhi police have busted a Mumbai-based gang of cheats which used to fly to Delhi from Mumbai to cheat elderly people, mostly women, by hypnotising them.
Five members of the gang were arrested on Saturday by the special staff team of south district.
They used to target people by posing themselves as police officers. The arrested persons have been identified as Sanjay Tehzib Jaffery (40), Shazman (45), Iqbal Ali (25), Mukhtiyar Hussain (22) and Kalender Hussain. Jaffery and Shazman hail from Mumbai while the other three are from Madhya Pradesh. With their arrest, police claimed to have solved 18 cases of cheating committed by the gang.
Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south) said the arrest came following investigation into a complaint lodged by one Monika Bagga who was targeted by the gang.
“She was returning to her Mehrauli home from Sheikh Sarai transport office when two persons, introducing themselves as police officers, asked her to take off her jewellery and keep them in her bag, as the area was highly crime-prone. She was hypnotised and robbed of her belongings,” said Sharma.
During investigation it was learnt that the gang comes to Delhi by flight and fly back after committing the crime. Accordingly, a trap was laid and they were arrested.
During interrogation Jaffrey revealed that his knowledge of hypnotism helped him form a gang.
