A bid to dominate the local cable television business in Haryana’s Sonepat led them to procure and, subsequently smuggle into the Capital, a cache of sophisticated weapons the likes of which were last witnessed by the Delhi Police two decades ago.
Police said Dharmender, Devender, Vikram and Mandeep were in the process of procuring an AK 47 rifle to execute their opponents through trained shooters. “The gang, which even used to loan its sophisticated weapons to local criminals to perform hits, had performed a recce of a particular area to eliminate one of their biggest rivals, identified as Sheelu. The SLR had especially been procured for killing Sheelu,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
Meanwhile, the fading serial numbers etched on the said weapons, according to sources, are the police’s only hope in unraveling their origin.
“We have written to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to ascertain whom the said weapons had been issued to. This will help us make sure whether they were stolen from licensed paramilitary personnel or whether they had an inside man in a government-run arms manufacturing unit,” the officer said.
