Bike-borne men gunned down a man in front of his wife and two minor sons during an alleged robbery bid at an isolated spot near Modi Nagar in Ghaziabad around Monday noon.

The 30-year-old victim was on way with his wife and two sons, aged 4 and 6 years, on a bike to attend a wedding in their village. The robbers allegedly decamped with the earrings, bangles and gold chain of the man’s wife.

“At an isolated spot near Bhojpur, two armed men came on a bike and hit our bike. All four of us fell down. They asked me to take out my bangles, earrings and chain. I handed the jewellery to them. They wanted my husband’s mobile. He said he will take out the SIM card first. But they fired a shot which hit his abdomen,” said the man’s wife.

“I shouted for help and a couple on a bike stopped at some distance. But they were scared as the robbers were armed. A passerby rushed my husband to a local hospital from where he was referred to Ghaziabad,” she said.

The victim was rushed to Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad where he died of injuries. The family claimed police arrived at the hospital at 4.15pm, hours after the incident.

Some locals informed the police about the incident but the PCR van allegedly went in a different direction.

“The person who called for help told us the location of another road, which was 4km from the spot. Then we rushed to a hospital in Modi Nagar from where we rushed to another hospital in Meerut. Later, we got information that the victim was in Ghaziabad,” said RS Awana, the constable posted on the PCR van.

The police said apart from robbery they were also investigating the angle of personal enmity related to a rape case lodged by the victim’s family against three persons on April 1.

“The case was lodged after a young woman, the victim’s cousin, was allegedly raped. A woman was named as conspirator and she had come out of jail recently. It is being checked whether the other men had come out of jail or not. Initially when the station house officer, Modi Nagar, reached the spot, the victim’s wife did not tell mention the jewellery taken away,” a police spokesperson said.

The victim’s father said he had no rivalry with anyone and did not even suspect a rival group with whom he is locked in a land dispute case for the past 7-8 years.
