Ghazipur to get one more slaughterhouse

The Ghazipur slaughterhouse has proved insufficient to meet the city’s growing demand for meat. This has forced the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to come up with a new proposal of building another slaughterhouse near the existing structure.

The Ghazipur slaughterhouse has proved insufficient to meet the city’s growing demand for meat. This has forced the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to come up with a new proposal of building another slaughterhouse near the existing structure.

The slaughterhouse, built at Ghazipur Sanitary Landfill Site (SLF), has been functional since 2009, but a lot of illegal slaughter continues unabated in the city as the abattoir is able to slaughter only about 5,000 animals per shift, while the demand is much more.

Stressing on the need of creating another abattoir at the site, Municipal Commissioner KS Mehra has proposed to set up one more ultra-modern abattoir in the region on ‘Built- Operate-Transfer’ (BOT) basis.

In his proposal, he has reasoned that the new structure will curb illegal slaughtering.

“There is need to establish another abattoir, keeping in mind the requirement of the city and demand of the meat shopkeepers. As the Delhi Development Authority is not prepared to provide land for the purpose in any part of the city, the proposed abattoir may be created at Ghazipur SLF on BOT basis,” reads the proposal.

A proposal in this regard will be placed before the standing committee for approval and a committee will be constituted to determine the capacity of the slaughter house, technical requirements and rules and regulations.

Presently, slaughtering at Ghazipur abattoir is done in three shifts. Morning and evening shifts are reserved for general traders. The middle shift is fixed for the concessionaire, who has been given the facility for 10 years. The concessionaire pays R45 lakh per month to the MCD.

Since local shopkeepers prefer morning shifts for slaughtering their animals, the desired number of slaughterings cannot be undertaken at present. “The abattoir’s capacity is already saturated and so shopkeepers and meat traders’ association have been demanding to establish another facility to meet the demand,” said a senior official of MCD.
