A seventeen-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at Dakshinpuri in Southeast Delhi after she fared badly in her pre-board examinations on Wednesday, police said.
The police said Himanshi Chaudhary left behind a suicide note allegedly blaming her mother for her death.
According to the police, the incident took place around 7 am on Wednesday morning.
“She was studying till 4 am, after which she hung herself —dreading to face her mother after a few hours,” said a senior police officer.
Chaudhary, a Class 12 non-medical science stream student at Pushp Vihar’s Kendriya Vidyalaya allegedly decided to hang herself because of the ‘undue’ pressure that her mother Santosh had been exerting on her to perform well in her academics, police said.
She lived with her mother and elder brother, Vipin (22) at their three-room home. Her father died on January 15, 2009.
“The incident was brought to our notice as soon as the family discovered her corpse hanging from the fan in the living room near the main door entrance,” said Virender Singh Chahal, additional commissioner of police, Southeast Delhi.
Chahal said according to the suicide note, she decided to end her life after being continuously scolded by her mother because she had fared poorly in her pre-board exams.
But Himanshi’s family blamed the school. “Her mother was supporting her even after she got poor marks in her pre-boards,” said Ram Gopal Kharab (44), Himanshi’s maternal uncle. He attributed her drastic step to the pressure that the school had been exerting on her after her poor performance.
